Are You Wondering Why Gas Prices Have Fallen Recently?

The New York Times reports that gasoline prices are tumbling just in time for the holiday shopping season to begin. “Consumers can thank the tentative reduction in tensions in the Middle East and swelling supplies of domestic oil for their good fortune, and energy experts say prices could fall further if negotiations between the West and Iran progress.” It’s curious to think we may have to thank Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for low gas prices this holiday season. The former Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could talk prices up but recent negotiations in Europe over Iran’s nuclear developments are bringing them down. The actions, or lack of actions, of the United States in the middle East could help grow our economy and make the holiday season more cheerful. There was a spike in oil and gasoline prices over the summer after the Egyptian army staged a coup and when the United States appeared poised to take military action in Syria. The Brent oil benchmark climbed above $115 a barrel in …

Ideology Trumps the Factual Reality…AGAIN

What do they call people who cannot deal with things the way they really are? “The reduction in the top tax rates appears to be uncorrelated with saving, investment and productivity growth. The top tax rates appear to have little or no relation to the size of the economic pie. However, the top tax rate reductions appear to be associated with the increasing concentration of income at the top of the income distribution.” According to a recent Forbes article – “These three sentences [from the Congressional Research Service, the completely non-partisan arm of the Library of Congress that has been advising Congress—and only Congress—on matters of policy and law for nearly a century] do nothing less than blow apart the central tenet of modern conservative economic theory, confirming that lowering tax rates on the wealthy does nothing to grow the economy while doing a great deal to concentrate more wealth in the pockets of those at the very top of the income chain.” So what do you do with such a report if you are a Senate …

The must-see numbers from Facebook’s taxes

These tax breaks need to be stopped!!!! Please sign the petition telling Congress it’s time to end tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy. Click here to sign. Despite Facebook reporting profits of over $1.1 billion in 2012, the company is expected to pay no federal or state income taxes. In fact, Facebook will receive net tax refunds totaling $429 million, because tax deductions on executive stock options can be written off as salary deductions. Less than a week after the sequester has officially gone into effect, bringing with it painful budget cuts, layoffs, and furloughs for employees, this is a perfect example of how the deficit and spending cuts are driven by loopholes that allow corporations and wealthy Americans to get all the breaks. Congress desperately needs to reform the tax code so that the most successful among us pay their fair share. Please, click here to sign the petition telling Congress it’s time to end tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy. Keep fighting, Rachel Colyer Associate Campaign Director, Daily Kos P.S. Elizabeth Warren Starts New Leadership PAC

Elizabeth Warren has started a new Leadership PAC. Americans are fighters. We are tough, resourceful, and creative. If we have the chance to fight on a level playing field — where everyone pays a fair share and everyone has a real shot — then no one can stop us. That’s what I’m fighting for each and every day in the United States Senate. But here’s the honest truth: at the end of the day, my one voice — and my one vote — isn’t enough. We need many strong voices fighting together to stand up for what we believe in. I’ve formed a new organization — PAC for a Level Playing Field — to advance our fight. Together we can do more, and we can support candidates across the country who believe in consistent accountability, investing in opportunity, and fighting for families and small businesses. Just like our campaign, the PAC for a Level Playing Field won’t be funded by big corporate interests. It will be funded by grassroots donors like you. Will you join …
