Jan 19 – Join Toni Atkins for a Day of Service in Honor of Dr. King

This weekend, many of us will honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday on January 15 with a holiday from school or work. Dr. King dedicated his life to equality for all and in 1964 received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality in our nation through the techniques of nonviolence and civil disobedience. He is an American hero whose life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet on April 4, 1968. Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities through a day of service. This year, I will be joining with volunteers from the Human Rights Campaign to help assemble care bags for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless youth served by San Diego Youth Services. Estimates are that at least 40% of the homeless young people on our streets are LGBT and they urgently need basic items to help them survive. …

Nov 11 – A Day to Honor Those Who Have Served

Friends, Monday, November 11, is Veterans Day, a time to honor all of those who have worn the uniform of one of the armed services and dedicated themselves to defending our nation and our way of life. As part of a family with a long military tradition, I know how much it means to those who have served that we pause in our daily lives to express our respect and gratitude. California has the second largest population of veterans of any state and San Diego has the second largest veteran population of all the cities in the state. That is why it is extremely important to me to advocate legislative policy that makes the transition to civilian life as easy as possible for those leaving the service. I am pleased to report to you that the State Legislature was able to enact the following measures this year: Military Preventing Homelessness Among Veterans: I was proud to be a principal co-author of Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez‘s AB 639, which will ask voters to approve the …
