Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins Names Betty Peabody as Woman of the Year

March is National Women’s History Month. Every year the National Women’s History Project selects a theme through which to examine women’s history. This year’s theme, “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives,” reminds us that women’s voices matter. Women are an integral part of our nation’s history, from Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who inspired the nation-wide women’s suffrage movement, to California-native Sally Ride, who was both the first woman and youngest American to travel to space. While these women have set historical milestones, this year’s theme recognizes the everyday contributions that women make to our society. Women make a big impact whether or not their deeds are recorded in history books. Nearly half of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income. In addition to being the cornerstone of many California families, women are leaders in sectors as diverse as biotech, hospitality and education. Sarah Boot Announces Run for CA78

Clubmember Sarah Boot @SarahRBoot announced she’s running for the state Assembly’s 78th District. She attended our January meeting to announce her run to clubmembers, and she came to our Social Time after the meeting to sit and chat with a large group of members including Ed Harris @EdHarrisSD who is also running for the seat to be vacated by termed out Madame Speaker Toni Atkins in 2016. Clubmember Toni Atkins has made an early endorsement of Sarah in the race. The club is planning a panel discussion with Sarah moderating a discussion on human trafficking, a subject she was closely involved with as a federal prosecutor. (Details to be announced.) Oct 1 – League of Women Voters Candidates Reception & Forum

The League of Women Voters of San Diego invites you to attend a Meet the Candidates Reception and Forum for the following positions to be decided with the November 4 election: State Senate, Districts 36, 38 and 40; State Assembly, Districts 71, 77, 78 and 79; San Diego City Council, District 6; San Diego Community College, Districts A and E; Superior Court Judge, Office 25; and San Diego Unified School Board, Area B. When Wednesday, October 1, 6 – 8 pm Where Hall of Champions in Balboa Park Moderated by Carl Luna, PhD Professor of Political Science, San Diego Mesa College Candidates will each make two minute introductory statements. Time will be provided to network and ask questions of candidates in an informal atmosphere. Forum will follow League of Women Voters protocols. Light refreshments will be served. Voice of San Diego’s annual Politifest is a family friendly festival featuring community booths, activities, music, beer and smart conversations about San Diego’s future. You can see big name guests like Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins and Neel Kashkari, the Republican candidate for governor. There’s the Crux Partners Beer Garden with ping pong and Stone Brewing Co. microbrews. And there’s more!
