Oct 15 – Prison Industry in California

Our meeting this month has been moved forward a week. It will take place Sunday, October 15th, at the Point Loma Assembly (3035 Talbot St), from 4:00pm – 5:30pm. As announced previously, we will handle two more endorsements – and we will have Chula Vista city council candidate Mark Bartlett speak about the prison industry here in California. The first endorsement we will handle is for Assemblyman Todd Gloria. He will be present at our meeting and members will have the opportunity to ask questions. He has had a very productive session, so check out some of the his legislation here. Second, we will consider endorsing Congressman Scott Peters in his re-election bid. While he will be unable to attend our meeting on Sunday, his representative will be there to answer any policy related questions you may have. Here is his website and propublica information for your review prior to our meeting. Our speaker will be Mark Bartlett, candidate for Chula Vista City Council District 1 and Co-founder of Reentry Resources for Change. After prison, …

Notes from January’s Meeting – Endorsements for SD39, AD78 and D1

2016 kicked off with a great, well-attended meeting and a chance to meet local elected officials and several candidates for this years races. Club president Susan Peinado called the meeting  to order at 4:03pm. Susan thanked everyone for coming and introduced new members. She then invited the candidates not on the agenda and their representatives to address the club for a couple of minutes each. Kate Lyons spoke on behalf of Congressmember Scott Peters and invited us all to attend a free event on February 19 with special guest Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer to be held at the (magnificent) house of Bill and Michelle Lerach (more details here). We heard from Gil Cabrera and Bryan Pease both running for San Diego City Attorney (the club endorsement meeting will be on February 28), as well as Georgette Gomez who’s running for San Diego City Council District 9 (the club endorsement meeting will be on March 20) and from Keith Mikas running for District 5. Susan also recognized David Warmoth and Howard Singer, Presidents of the Democrats for Equality and the …

Club President Susan Peinado called the meeting to order at 4:03 PM. Susan welcomed and introduced guests, including Lucy, Maggie, and Beth. She also welcomed new club members Jess Durfee, Phil and Debbie Currier, Brian Pease, Rena Marrocco, Laura Fink, Deanneka and Ricardo Flores, and Craig Roberts. She then gave a ‘rant’ on the conditions of club’s meeting location – the Point Loma Assembly – and the need for monies for air conditioning and a new electrical system. Susan then introduced elected officials and candidates and welcomed each to give 2 minutes of remarks: Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (who is seeking election to Senate District 39)  provided a legislative update noting that legislation to increase the state’s minimum wage would come up in January or February; Todd Gloria (who is seeking election to Assembly District 78), provided a brief legislative update on City affairs; Georgette Gómez (candidate for San Diego City Council District 9); Sarah Saez (candidate for San Diego City Council District 9); Joe LaCava (candidate for San Diego City Council District 1); and Mara Elliott (candidate for San Diego …

OB Street Fair 2015 [Video]

Thanks to everyone who came along and said hello at the OB Street Fair on Saturday, as well as those who staffed the booth including members of the Veterans Democratic Club and Democratic Woman’s Club. Madame Speaker Toni Atkins, Todd Gloria (www.toddgloriaforassembly.com) and José Caballero (www.Jose4sd.com) all stopped by. We welcomed supporters of AB700 who gathered petitions to let voters know who really is paying for political ads — on the ads themselves. If you didn’t make it to the Fair you can sign their petition online. Supporters of the Neighborhoods for Clean Elections also distributed information and gathered support. The weather was kind, the crowds large, we registered over 20 new voters and from early morning until  the evening the constant refrain from passers by was – this was a great week for Democrats! The Supreme Court’s judgements on the Affordable Care Act, fair housing and gay marriage showed the importance of Democratic appointments to the court and the President’s eulogy for slain Pastor Clementa Pinckney was universally appreciated.
