Aug 28 – Annual Summer Potluck with BBQ – Support Western Service Workers Association Back-to-School Drive

As is our tradition the August Monthly Meeting will be a social affair with our Annual Summer Potluck and fundraising for the Western Service Workers Association and their Back-to-School Drive. Sunday August 28, 2016 –  4:00-6:00PM  Please invite your friends and potential members to attend and meet fellow Democrats and elected officials, in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Please bring school supplies, hand held calculators and backpacks or a generous check for the Western Service Workers Association Back-to-School Drive. If you cannot attend but wish to make a donation send a check to the Western Service Workers Association c/o of Point Loma Democratic Club, PO Box 7802, San Diego, CA 92167. Notes From the Annual Summer BBQ 2014

Thanks to everyone who attended this year’s Summer BBQ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the club. Those who weren’t able to make it missed out on a great speech from San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria, focused on the minimum wage increase. We also heard from Kevin Beiser running for the San Diego Unified School Board, and Katie Phelan who educated us about organizing the nurses at the San Diego Veterans Administration Hospital. Christina Wu asked for volunteers for Carol Kim’s campaign and Tim Hanna asked for Scott Peters’ campaign. David Egan from San Diego 350.org spoke about the People’s Climate March San Diego, and the club unanimously endorsed a proposal supporting the day of action. Chris Ward, who is running for City Council District 3 in 2016 attended along with his colleague on Marty Block’s staff, Roberto Alcantar. We also welcomed the President of the Democrats for Equality, David Warmoth and Unified Port of San Diego Commissioner, Rafael Castellanos and club member Sarah Boot. Aug 24 – Annual Summer BBQ – Celebrate 60 Years on the Point & Support Western Service Workers Association Back-to-School Drive

Special Guests City Council President Todd Gloria, Councilmember David Alvarez and Unified Schoolboard President Kevin Beiser Todd Gloria was elected to his second term as Councilmember representing District Three in 2012. He served as Council President in 2013 and was re-elected Council President for 2014. He served as Interim Mayor of the City of San Diego in 2013/14 and he recently helped pass a minimum wage increase in San Diego. Prior to his election in 2008, Todd served as District Director to U.S. Congresswoman Susan A. Davis and worked for the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency. Todd’s volunteer efforts to improve the community include his work as a San Diego Housing Commissioner from 2005 until his election to the City Council, and as a member of the Mid-City Prostitution Impact Panel. In 2013, Todd was one of 24 individuals chosen for the Aspen Institute’s Rodel Fellowship Program for Public Leadership, recognizing him as one of the nation’s most promising young leaders in American government.
