Oct 15 – Prison Industry in California

Our meeting this month has been moved forward a week. It will take place Sunday, October 15th, at the Point Loma Assembly (3035 Talbot St), from 4:00pm – 5:30pm. As announced previously, we will handle two more endorsements – and we will have Chula Vista city council candidate Mark Bartlett speak about the prison industry here in California. The first endorsement we will handle is for Assemblyman Todd Gloria. He will be present at our meeting and members will have the opportunity to ask questions. He has had a very productive session, so check out some of the his legislation here. Second, we will consider endorsing Congressman Scott Peters in his re-election bid. While he will be unable to attend our meeting on Sunday, his representative will be there to answer any policy related questions you may have. Sep 24 – Join in the Discussion this Weekend at Politifest

The club has a booth at Politifest 2016, the annual get together to discuss local politics with voices from across San Diego. Come along and support Democratic candidates Mara Elliott, Candidate for San Diego City Attorney Georgette Gomez, Candidate for San Diego City Council District 9 Scott Peters, Congressmember CA 52 Colonel Doug Applegate, Candidate for Congress CA 49 Politifest 2016 will take place at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, at San Diego State University. Held in partnership with the SDSU School of Journalism and Media Studies, this all-day public affairs conference will feature two national keynote speakers, as well as workshops and sessions that focus on the November ballot. The ballot this November is full of major decisions for voters. At Politifest, rivals on all sides of the most contentious issues will face off and debate their merits. Big local names and elected officials will debate major topics like: Should we build a convadium? Should we raise the sales tax a half-cent to fund transportation and open space preservation? Notes from October Meeting – The Spirit of Service: America’s Veterans and the Obligation We All Share

Club President Susan Peinado called the meeting to order five minutes earlier than usual at 3:55 PM. She welcomed and introduced guests, including Howard Singer, Jess Durfee, and Brian White with CBS News 8. Susan then introduced the following elected officials and candidates and welcomed each to give 2 minutes of remarks: Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Candidate District 1, San Diego City Council: Barbara Bry Candidate District 7, San Diego City Council: Justin DeCesare Candidate San Diego City Attorney: Gil Cabrera Candidate San Diego City Attorney: Rafael Castellanos Candidate for Congress (Vs. Congressman Darrel Issa): Douglas Applegate Candidate San Diego Mayor: Gretchen Newsom The agenda for the meeting was approved unanimously. Congressmember Scott Peters Congressmember Scott Peters provided an overview of recent congressional news, including the race for Speaker, gun regulations, climate change, renewable energy, and innovations in the military. Oct 25 – Monthly Meeting – The Spirit of Service: America’s Veterans and the Obligation We All Share

Nathan Fletcher is the featured speaker at our October meeting discussing veterans affairs and the work of his foundation, the Three Wise Men. The Three Wise Men Foundation exists to raise awareness of the problems our veterans face and raise funds that provide needed transition programs to ensure our veterans have the services they need to succeed when their military service ends. Previously, Nathan represented San Diego in the California State Assembly. During his time in office, he served as Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Jobs in the New Economy and was a leading advocate for repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He also authored the landmark public safety legislation “Chelsea’s Law,” which imposed tougher penalties on the worst child predators in California. Before his election to the legislature, Nathan served in the United States Marine Corps and was recognized for valor in combat. He is the Chairman of the Three Wise Men Foundation, a veteran-focused organization he founded in memory of his friends and family killed in action in Afghanistan. Nathan has also worked …

Congressmember Scott Peters is now a Senior Party Whip as well as serving on the Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. Despite these extra commitments he, and Mary Anne Pintar, still made time to visit the club meeting on Sunday afternoon.
