Jan 19 – Join Toni Atkins for a Day of Service in Honor of Dr. King

This weekend, many of us will honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday on January 15 with a holiday from school or work. Dr. King dedicated his life to equality for all and in 1964 received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality in our nation through the techniques of nonviolence and civil disobedience. He is an American hero whose life was cut short by an assassin’s bullet on April 4, 1968. Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities through a day of service. This year, I will be joining with volunteers from the Human Rights Campaign to help assemble care bags for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless youth served by San Diego Youth Services. Estimates are that at least 40% of the homeless young people on our streets are LGBT and they urgently need basic items to help them survive. …

Jan 26 – Monthly Meeting – Howard Wayne’s Preview of 2014 & Jeeni Criscenzo from Amikas on Housing Homeless Women & Children With a Focus on Veterans

Our January meeting’s key speaker is former Assembly Member Howard Wayne who will provide his insights on the 2014 elections. Howard has usually been our Annual Winter Party speaker at our December meetings providing a review of the year, but with the number of great candidates at that last meeting, Howard graciously postponed his annual update to January. Come and find out what the hot races and key issues will be in 2014 – he will be the main featured speaker after the introduction of any candidates who are present, and the latest news on the election. After his Preview of 2014 Howard will take questions until 5:00pm. Cynara Velazquez will update us with the the latest on the race for mayor of San Diego and the David Alvarez Campaign. Learn what the campaign has planned between now and the election, and how our forces in OB and Point Loma can most effectively contribute to David Alvarez’s successful bid to become the next Democratic Mayor of San Diego! Voter Registration

It’s always important, but between now and the run off election for Mayor of San Diego it’s doubly important. Greg Bolian has for years led the local effort to register new Democratic voters, and he and his crew were hard at work today after the downtown  naturalization ceremony for new citizens. If you’re interested in volunteering for similar events you can email Greg and he’ll get you on the mailing list for the next event, as well as arranging to get you trained on the ins and outs of the registration form, and commonly asked questions. The atmosphere at these events is always very positive with a lot of happy new citizens from all over the world, excited to start taking part in our great experiment in democracy. It’s inspiring to meet and register new, enthusiastic Democratic voters!
