Sep 22 – Monthly Meeting – Covering California With Obamacare

The Point Loma Democratic Club will be focusing on the new California healthcare initiative for our September and October meetings. There are members of our club, children of club members, plus friends and neighbors who do not currently have affordable healthcare. We want to do everything we can to help everyone feel comfortable with and excited about this new opportunity. The club is working with Senator Marty Block’s office, the Council of Community Clinics and 2-1-1, plus others, to put together programming for our members and the communities of Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Loma Portal. At the Sunday, September 22 meeting, we want to provide information on what Covered California is, and isn’t. We hope to provide a robust program that packs in information to counteract all the misinformation. A Party of Contrasts – Notes From the Annual Summer BBQ

Just seventy-two hours after announcing his resignation as Mayor of San Diego, Bob Filner attended the club’s Annual Summer BBQ. The circumstances were quite different from last year when he attended midway between his hard fought primary and general election campaigns. Club members Judi Curry and the folks who run the San Diegans for a Progressive Future had slightly different takes on his visit. Judi writing for her OB Rag column noted: “In talking about the Mayor, most of us were very surprised to see him attending the meeting. In a way it was very sad and was bitter-sweet, because we were all aware of what “could have been” if things had worked out differently… There is a lot of hope, a lot of skepticism, a lot of discontent by the members of this group.
