Notes from September’s Meeting – Rob the Poor Feed the Rich

Club President Susan Peinado called the meeting to order at 4:05 PM. Welcome and Introduction of Elected Officials and Candidates Susan welcomed and introduced new club members: Judy Collier, Tony Cataldo, Kelly King, David Engel, Becca Taylor, and Joe LaCava (who’s been a member for a while, but somehow missed getting introduced before). Susan then welcomed and introduced Councilmember (and club member) Ed Harris. Ed provided an overview of his opposition on the renewal leasing package and rates of Belmont Park. He stated that information provided was not consistent in regard to the square footage of the property and the lease rates. This month’s meeting features environmental lawyer Cory Briggs and President of the newly reinvigorated Democratic Woman’s Club of San Diego County, Linda Perine. (Clubmember) Linda will provide an overview of the series of articles and forums that the Democratic Woman’s Club is presenting on: Who Runs San Diego? If you are a reader of the San Diego Free Press you may already be following the articles that commenced this summer with contributions from Eva Posner, Doug Porter, Cory Briggs and Linda. Cory who successfully sued the city over the legality of the TOT, wrote one of the recent pieces entitled The Use and Abuse of the Transient Occupancy Tax. The City recently voted not to appeal the Superior Court’s decision so this means of funding the Convention Center expansion is halted. Cory will explain how certain groups, with support from the Mayor and City Council, have gone about transferring public money into private hands.
