Oct 1 – League of Women Voters Candidates Reception & Forum

The League of Women Voters of San Diego invites you to attend a Meet the Candidates Reception and Forum for the following positions to be decided with the November 4 election: State Senate, Districts 36, 38 and 40; State Assembly, Districts 71, 77, 78 and 79; San Diego City Council, District 6; San Diego Community College, Districts A and E; Superior Court Judge, Office 25; and San Diego Unified School Board, Area B. When Wednesday, October 1, 6 – 8 pm Where Hall of Champions in Balboa Park Moderated by Carl Luna, PhD Professor of Political Science, San Diego Mesa College Candidates will each make two minute introductory statements. Time will be provided to network and ask questions of candidates in an informal atmosphere. Forum will follow League of Women Voters protocols. Light refreshments will be served. A Party of Contrasts – Notes From the Annual Summer BBQ

Just seventy-two hours after announcing his resignation as Mayor of San Diego, Bob Filner attended the club’s Annual Summer BBQ. The circumstances were quite different from last year when he attended midway between his hard fought primary and general election campaigns. Club members Judi Curry and the folks who run the San Diegans for a Progressive Future had slightly different takes on his visit. Judi writing for her OB Rag column noted: “In talking about the Mayor, most of us were very surprised to see him attending the meeting. In a way it was very sad and was bitter-sweet, because we were all aware of what “could have been” if things had worked out differently… There is a lot of hope, a lot of skepticism, a lot of discontent by the members of this group. Sep 12 – League of Women Voters – Ocean Beach Meeting – Mental Health

The League of Women Voters will be holding their first meeting after a summer break since their inaugural meeting in Ocean Beach in May. When September 12, from 10:30am-12pm Where Point Loma Library, 3701 Voltaire St, San Diego, CA 92107 They will be discussing Mental Heatlh. Massacres by mentally unstable shooters have focused attention on the inadequacies of the U.S. mental health care system in which less than half of the seriously ill can get treatment. How good is San Diego County’s Mental Health System and what needs to be done to improve it? The LWVSD will be looking at this question and the League’s County Mental Health position created in 1997 in order to have a serious and informative discussion on what the County is doing or not doing. Aug 24 – WOSD Kicks Off Campaign Against Violence Against Women: No More Excuses. Stop It Now!

The recent spotlight on sexual harassment in San Diego is indicative of what many women endure in their lives. Women Occupy San Diego (WOSD), is kicking off a campaign, No More Excuses. Stop it now! to declare San Diego as ground zero for ending violence against women in every form, in partnership with: League of Women Voters-San Diego International Museum of Human Rights at San Diego Women’s Equity Council, United Nations Association-San Diego Chapter Women’s Museum of California Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition American Women for International Understanding The kick-off event is scheduled for: Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm World Beat Center, 2100 Park Blvd, San Diego 92101. Speakers at the event will present an overview of how violence is perpetrated against women and actions we must take to end it.
