Notes from the September Meeting – Measure A – How to Get Around for the Next 40 Years?

Our September meeting focused on one of the most important ballot measures this November – Measure A is the best plan SANDAG has yet proposed, but how good is it? Do we want to lock future generations locked into transport schemes from the last century? As Susan was busy with her house move, Jonathan Wubbolding chaired the meeting (and gave the treasurer’s report). He began by welcoming guests new and returning members who joined at last month’s Party including Sandy and Jim Howland, and Cynara Kidwell volunteers at last month’s Summer Potluck and BBQ volunteers at Saturday’s Politifest (some photos here) Jonathan also asked for volunteers for the OB Holiday Parade – Saturday December 3rd. He then introduced our main program about a measure on the ballot this November that could determine how we’ll get around San Diego County for the next 40 years. Transportation affects the quality of lives – how we get to work, how we get to the beach. It shapes the growth of our cities, and the health of children and seniors. Sep 25 – Measure A – How to Get Around for the Next 40 Years?

There’s a Measure on the ballot this November that could determine how we’ll get around San Diego County for the next 40 years. Transportation affects the quality of lives – how we get to work, how we get to the beach. It shapes the growth of our cities, and the health of children and seniors. The Republican Party of San Diego County and the San Diego County Democratic Party both agree on one thing – vote No on Measure A this November. On Sunday we’ll hear two reasonable voices arguing for and against the Measure. Anthony Montalvo is the Outreach Manager for Citizens for a Better San Diego, a campaign organization working to support Measure A. Gretchen Newsom is the Political Director for IBEW 569, and a member of a diverse coalition that includes environmental, labor, business, and community advocacy groups that oppose Measure A. Gretchen Newsom Gives Union Perspective on the TPP Trade Deal

Originally posted on San Marcos Democratic Club:
Gretchen Newsom of IBEW Local 569 discusses TPP Have you heard about the “TPP” and wondered why there is so much disagreement among Democrats, Labor and our President about it? Gretchen Newsom, Political Director of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Local 569 in San Diego spoke to our club members at our monthly meeting about the current trade deal with Asia currently under negotiation. She then unraveled the confusion around what the various acronyms such as TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership), TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) and TAA (Trade Adjustment Assistance) mean. The first item that Congress already passed a few weeks ago was “TPA” –…
