California DISCLOSE Act Passes its First Hurdle!

Last week, SB 52, the California DISCLOSE Act, passed through the Senate Elections Committee. This was a first crucial step in fighting back against unlimited secret funding in political campaigns! Authored by Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill and sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, SB 52 will require political ads to clearly and prominently show their top three funders so that voters know who is behind them. Last week was an amazing showing of grassroots and organizational support for SB 52. Nearly 120 people from all around the state came to testify in the Senate Elections Committee in favor of SB 52. That made quite an impression in the Capitol — and after everybody testified, SB 52 passed the committee on a 4-1 vote! Senate Elections Committee Chair Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) and Senators Alex Padilla (D-Van Nuys), Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), and Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) all voted Yes. There are a lot of petitions that make the rounds, but getting money out of politics is one of the most important issues we face as it effects all other political actions we attempt. Overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision will take time, and this Californian Senate Bill is just one step to help achieve that. Last year’s Assembly bill was passed in August, but ran out of time to make it through the Senate.
