Dec 8 – Annual Holiday Potluck

The annual Point Loma Democratic Club Holiday Potluck will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Rollins home and we’ll be joined by Congressman Scott Peters and Mayoral candidate David Alvarez. This is a great opportunity to meet our Representative, and the future Mayor of San Diego! Bring a dish to share and $5 or just yourself and $10, each. The club will provide the ham, turkey, wine and some soft drinks. We will be ready to check in at 3:30pm and will be ready to serve about 4:30pm. Come and enjoy the company of good Democrats. The election is only a couple of months away and David needs to raise millions of $$ to overcome the GOP, the downtown “Good Old Boys” and the Lincoln Club. We can not process credit cards for David and the club can not donate directly to him so please bring your checkbook and donate whatever you can to David Alvarez for Mayor. Thanks for helping get David elected. Remember to bring a (unwrapped) toy gift for …

Voter Registration

It’s always important, but between now and the run off election for Mayor of San Diego it’s doubly important. Greg Bolian has for years led the local effort to register new Democratic voters, and he and his crew were hard at work today after the downtown  naturalization ceremony for new citizens. If you’re interested in volunteering for similar events you can email Greg and he’ll get you on the mailing list for the next event, as well as arranging to get you trained on the ins and outs of the registration form, and commonly asked questions. The atmosphere at these events is always very positive with a lot of happy new citizens from all over the world, excited to start taking part in our great experiment in democracy. It’s inspiring to meet and register new, enthusiastic Democratic voters!

Bob Filner Failed, Not Democratic Ideology

Mayor Bob Filner’s story is a mix of extremes: professional and social triumph combined with self- admitted personal failure. Considering the nature of the accusations, Filner’s personal problems will more than likely overshadow any success he has achieved politically, thereby bringing his political career to an end. In recent days, the Republican Party has attempted to capitalize on this disturbing and pathetic story. On 2 August 2013, the online site for “The Hill” quoted a joint statement by five official Republican committees as follows: “Democrats hypocrisy is appalling, and with their silence, they are sanctioning the actions of Bob Filner and Anthony Weiner and numerous others who have assaulted, harassed, and preyed on women.” Such a criticism is clearly an opportunistic attack by the Republican Party, who is still recovering from the trouncing it received during the 2012 election. This trouncing was due in no small part to its anti-abortion and anti-contraception stances. Despite its self-serving motivation, however, the Republican Party has actually raised a valid question as to why the Democratic Party has allowed …
