Notes from January Meeting – D2 Endorsement Meeting

The meeting started later than usual because of a play at the Pt Loma Assembly.   Statements from candidates and elected officials (or reps) not on Agenda: Lori Salaña – Candidate for San Diego County Supervisor Doug Case – Political Affairs Director for State Senator Toni Atkins Matt Valenti – Candidate for SD City Council, District 6 Dave Myers – Candidate for SD County Sheriff Rafael Perez – Candidate for SD Community College Board District E Mike McQuary – Up for reelection to SD Unified School Board, Sub-District Tommy Hough – Candidate for SD City Council, District 6 PROGRAM: ENDORSEMENT FORUM FOR SAN DIEGO CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT 2 Endorsement Committee Chair Dev Zaveri-Tabb presided over the forum. After the opening statements were made, Dev conducted a 15-minute Q & A session, using her own questions and a selection submitted by Club Members. Every candidate was given one minute to respond to each question and allowed a 30-second rebuttal to any personal attacks; afterwards, they gave 3-minute closing statements. Jan 21 – D2 Endorsement Meeting

Note: This month’s meeting starts 30 minutes later than normal to accommodate a play at the Assembly. This Sunday, January 21, 2018, Point Loma Democratic Club will hold our first meeting of 2018. This is an important meeting, as we will consider if and who the club should endorse to run against Zapf in our home San Diego City Council District 2. This will be a huge opportunity for you to hear the candidates in person and to ask them questions – so read up on the candidates and bring your questions to ask! Notes from April Meeting – Voting Rights

Club President Jonathan Wubbolding called the meeting to order at 4:05 PM. He thanked everyone for coming and asked any new members to stand and introduce themselves. He then made a call for any elected officials or their representatives, former elected officials, or any candidates who wished to speak and the following responded: Doug Case, Political Affairs Coordinator for State Senator Toni Atkins, gave a brief update on the following bills: SB 562, the single-payer bill; SB 2, which would provide a permanent funding stream for affordable housing; SB 179, the gender recognition act; and, SB 54, the California Values Act, which would prohibit California law enforcement from enforcing immigration laws. Ed Harris, representative for the city lifeguards and former City Council member, gave an update on the controversy brewing between the Fire Chief and the Lifeguard Union. He said that the Fire Chief made a major change recently, without informing the lifeguards, about how emergency calls were dispatched. Now, when there is a need for an ocean rescue, 911 calls are sent to Police …

Notes from February’s Meeting – Endorsements for San Diego City Attorney and D3

Following on from January’s well attended endorsement meeting, February saw club members meet to consider endorsements in the San Diego City Attorney’s race and San Diego City Council District 3. San Diego City Attorney Gil Cabrera Rafael Castellanos Mara Elliott Bryan Pease San Diego City Council District 3 Anthony Bernal Chris Ward Club President Susan Peinado called the meeting to order 30 minutes earlier than usual (as there was a theatrical performance scheduled to start at 5:30pm). Susan thanked everyone for coming, especially those who brought snacks to share and introduced new members Christine Murphy’s household, Nick Serrano, William and Anita Tuchrello, Linda Salem, and David Warmoth. Susan introduced Ronnie Friedman-Barone who (together with Greg Bolian) were collecting signatures for a petition to get an initiative on the California ballot to abolish the death penalty and replace it with a life-sentence without parole. Susan then introduced candidates running for San Diego Mayor who each spoke for 2 minutes – Lawrence Zynda, Michael Kreizenbeck representing Lori Saldaña (who was ill) and Martha Welch. After the success of our January 2016 endorsement meeting, our February meeting provides club members in good standing to vote for their preferred candidate for San Diego City Attorney as well as San Diego City Council District 3.
