Notes from April Meeting – San Diego City Council D6 & San Diego Superior Court Endorsement Meeting

Merrin Muxlow, VP called the meeting to order at 4:15 PM. The floor was opened to elected officials, representatives of elected officials, former elected officials, candidates, and speakers on propositions for two-minute speeches. Doug Case – Political Affairs Director for State Senator, President Pro Tem Toni Atkins spoke about the legislation the senator had introduced in the current session Jordan Beane – our endorsed candidate for San Diego City Council District 2, gave an update on his campaign and brought yard signs for distribution Ruth Rollins – Spoke for Dr. Jen Campbell, candidate for San Diego City Council District 2, and invited everyone to a Meet and Greet to be held at her home next Sunday Endorsement Forum San Diego City Council District 6 Endorsement Committee Chair Dev Zaveri-Tabb presided. Jun 23 – OB Street Fair – The Start of the 2018 Elections

It’s June. That means that we don’t have our regular meeting at the Point Loma Assembly instead we have it at the OB Street Fair. This is the start of our General Election work to elect Democratic candidates for District 2, and across the city and county. Don’t sit home and think of it as a month off from our regular political meetings, think of it as a chance to meet voters and ask them what they’re concerned about. What are the issues that will get them out to vote? Are they spurred into action by the abuses of children whose parents are fleeing violence at home? Or are they concerned about the local environment, or short term vacation rentals?  Are they up in arms over affordable housing development in Point Loma, or the proliferation of brightly colored bicycles? As well as enjoying political conversations at the booth, you’ll get the chance to sample the delights of the fair. This month we welcome clubmember John Mattes to explain his investigations into Russian propagandists who created false social media accounts to influence the outcome of the U.S. Presidential election. Meeting held February 25, 2018 at the Point Loma Assembly. CALL TO ORDER:  President Jonathan Wubbolding called the meeting to order at 4:20 PM. Mar 18 – Do Citizens Get Hurt More in Soccer or Football?

This month’s meeting is a week earlier than usual to accommodate the inclusion of the Point Loma Assembly in the San Diego Architectural Foundation Open House on March 24-25. Joe LaCava will present arguments in opposition to the SoccerCity Initiative scheduled for the City of San Diego November 2018 ballot. The citizen’s initiative proposes a sale/lease to private investors and redevelopment of city-owned land including the Qualcomm Stadium and the former Charger Training System. Mr. LaCava is a Democratic Party activist and prominent advocate of community participation in the city’s planning process. He graduated from San Diego State University and is owner of LaCava Consulting. He is the former chair of the San Diego Community Planners Committee, the umbrella organization to the city’s 42 community planning groups, and was briefly a candidate for San Diego City Council in 2016. He currently serves on the eBoards for the Democrats for Environmental Action and Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3).
