Tell Scott Peters and the President to Keep Dodd-Frank Financial Regulations Strong

High on the agenda of the new GOP-controlled congress is the dismantling of financial regulations put in place after the most recent financial meltdown. The house recently voted to approve HR37 (Promoting Job Creation and Reducing Small Business Burdens Act) by 271:154 with 29 Democrats voting in favor – including our representative for the 52nd Scott Peters (Susan Davis and Juan Vargas voted against the bill). Thankfully the GOP doesn’t  have a veto proof majority in the Senate and the President said in his SOTU that we would veto any further weakening of the Dodd-Frank regulation (to standing applause from Elizabeth Warren). Clubmember Gail Mackler spoke at our January meeting urging us to call and/or write to Scott’s office to express our concern with his voting with the GOP on this important issue. You can cut and paste suggested text for a letter or email below (or download a PDF file). You can call/write to Scott at his San Diego address: 4350 Executive Drive, Suite 105 San Diego, CA 92121 phone: (858) 455-5550 Or use the form on his website to send an …

Obama and Peres Enjoy a Surprise Song in Israel

President Obama visiting Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem was treated to a wonderful surprise: three Israeli children, singing in Hebrew, English, and Arabic, performed “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie. After the performance the Presidents went to Peres’ garden and planted a Magnolia tree that Obama brought as a gift from the United States. If Annie can help bring peace to the region, is there anything that her can do spirit, can’t do? Thanks to

Elizabeth Warren Starts New Leadership PAC

Elizabeth Warren has started a new Leadership PAC. Americans are fighters. We are tough, resourceful, and creative. If we have the chance to fight on a level playing field — where everyone pays a fair share and everyone has a real shot — then no one can stop us. That’s what I’m fighting for each and every day in the United States Senate. But here’s the honest truth: at the end of the day, my one voice — and my one vote — isn’t enough. We need many strong voices fighting together to stand up for what we believe in. I’ve formed a new organization — PAC for a Level Playing Field — to advance our fight. Together we can do more, and we can support candidates across the country who believe in consistent accountability, investing in opportunity, and fighting for families and small businesses. Just like our campaign, the PAC for a Level Playing Field won’t be funded by big corporate interests. It will be funded by grassroots donors like you. Will you join …

Do You Want Filibuster Reform? Take Action Now

Sign the Credo Petition Fix the Senate Now – Take Action (Call and Petition) Since Obama was elected President the minority party has chosen to use the filibuster rule to dismantle 223 years of representative democracy. Take a look at this graph that Rachel Maddow posted to her blog in November of last year. At first glance it may appear that there was some progress during the 112th Congress as the number of filibusters declined but that decrease was only as a result of the GOP-led House passing far-right bills the Senate didn’t care to pass. The 112th Congress had the third most filibusters of any Congress, ever. Most observers are in agreement that the filibuster rule needs to be reformed. The question is how? Sensible suggestions have come from Senators Jeff Merkley, Tom Udall and Elizabeth Warren: eliminate the filibuster on the motions to proceed to votes reduce debate on nominees from 30 hours to two hours (after the filibuster was broken) make it easier to establish a conference committee require anyone who filibusters …
