Interdependence is a fundamental law of nature. Even tiny insects survive by mutual cooperation based on innate recognition of their interconnectedness. It is because our own human existence is so dependent on the help of others that our need for love lies at the very foundation of our existence. Therefore we need a genuine sense of responsibility and a sincere concern for the welfare of others.
– Dalai Lama
In light of recent events regarding COVID-19, we have decided to cancel our March meeting out of concern for containing the spread of the virus. Our community in Point Loma/Ocean Beach is home to many who are especially at risk for adverse outcomes.
Like the Dalai Lama says above, we need each other! Most of us are involved in Democratic politics because we want to see values like compassion and inclusiveness reflected in the government we choose. Let’s all remember to smile at each other (you can do this from 6+ feet away!) be generous with others, and support our community as best we can:
- Shop at locally owned food stores/restaurants or member-owned co-ops rather than big chains. The consequences of quarantine have the potential to be catastrophic for small business owners.
- Use your time off to make calls or send texts in support of candidates heading to the general election in November.
- Consider that others may not be able to afford to “stock up” and that empty stores due to overshopping will make things more difficult for people with limited purchasing power or limited time to shop.
Finally, if you are personally in need of anything, members are standing by. We look forward to seeing you in-person at a future meeting!
Love to you as we create the good future together,
Merrin Muxlow, President Point Loma Democratic Club
