We have two very important topics on this month’s agenda – that both affect our quality of life in San Diego.
Community Choice Energy
Community Choice Energy promises to take us closer to energy freedom, lower energy bills and more local clean energy. The Mayor recently asked the city to develop a business plan to allow for separation from SDG&E, but also provided the utility a chance to offer an alternative to maintain its monopoly.
Sophie Wolfram, Policy Advocate with Climate Action Campaign, will discuss climate change impacts and why cities are ideally suited to lead the global fight to reverse climate change. Her talk will cover the key strategies in San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, including Community Choice Energy, and address San Diego’s implementation efforts since the plan was adopted in 2015.
Short Term Vacation Rentals
Tom Coat approached us to talk about why he’s supporting Barbara Bry’s initiative on STVRs. Tom’s website Neighborhoods for Residents compares and contrasts the proposals that will come before the City Council on December 12th. Councilmember Barbara Bry (club Patron) will be at the meeting, and we’ve also messaged Chris Ward (and David Alvarez).
Sophie Wolfram (@SCWolfram) believes that social and economic justice and environmental protection are inherently linked and that the clear path forward is a just transition to a regenerative economy. As the Policy Advocate and Education Coordinator for Climate Action Campaign, Sophie tracks, analyzes, comments on, and organizes allies around policies related to our five fights. She also shares Climate Action Campaign’s vision with San Diego organizations and businesses and expands our network of allies to include a diverse cross-section of leaders across the region.
Sophie’s experience fighting for environmental protection spans nine years and include outreach, policy research, writing, and organizing in roles including Director of an Office of Sustainability student liaison program at Yale, Research Fellow at the Sustainable Endowments Institute, and Intern at Californians for Pesticide Reform and Missoula’s Community Food and Agriculture Coalition.Before returning to school in 2015, Sophie taught middle school math in the Mississippi Delta through Teach For America and at a charter school in Brooklyn, New York.
Sophie earned an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana in May 2017. Her thesis research addressed environmental justice in Southeast San Francisco and the Imperial Valley. She earned her B.A. in History from Yale University in 2010.
When she’s not working, Sophie can often be found out exploring San Diego’s hiking trails and beaches or searching for the region’s best vegetarian tacos.
