CaHPSA (California Health Professional Student Alliance) is a health equity advocacy group at UCSD and under the parent organization PNHP-CA (Physicians for a National Health Program). We work with students and health professionals to establish a single payer health system in California as well as advocate for healthcare justice and education in addition to providing students volunteering opportunities to serve the economically disadvantaged. Earlier this year, we helped lobby along with AllCare Alliance in Sacramento and with local Assembly members to help pass SB4, the recently signed bill that now allows undocumented children 19 and under to enroll in healthcare under medi-cal. We will continue to help lobby for coverage for all the undocumented in California, most likely supporting SB10 in the future, and any bills that we believe will facilitate health equity and a transformation to single payer health coverage. We are also in the process of setting up a station where our members serve as certified enrollment counselors under Covered California.
During October 1st, we will host an awareness event at UCSD for issues related to the lack of health equity and the lack of single payer health care. More information of the event can be found here.
We have two parts to the event: A daytime event where we set up a poster board collage consisting of individual’s stories affected by the lack of health care and an evening vigil where we partner up with UCSD SOM medical students involved in Whitecoats for Blacklives.
More information about our organization can be found here.
