May 6 – Who is Martin O’Malley? Find Out First Hand

Martin O’Malley was a Baltimore City Councilor from 1991 to 1999 and the Mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007. He was Governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015.

As Governor he signed laws to make certain illegal immigrants eligible for in-state college tuition, to legalize same-sex marriage, and to repeal the death penalty for all future offenders.

Unlike some of our local Representatives he is very clear on his stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership –

“We must stop entering into bad trade deals that hurt middle class wages and ship middle class jobs overseas. And we certainly shouldn’t be fast tracking failed deals.”

When he spoke at the California Democratic Party Convention last year it was clear he held aspirations to run for the highest office. The National Journal ran this profile of him in 2013.

Although Baltimore has been front of the news for the last week its former Mayor is less well known.

President Obama mentioned him at last month’s Whitehouse Press Correspondents’ Dinner –

Hillary [Clinton] kicked things off by going completely unrecognized at a Chipotle,” Obama said. “Not to be outdone, Martin O’Malley went completely unrecognized at a Martin O’Malley campaign event.”
