
Former club President, and current Chair of the Membership Committee, Jane D. Gawronski shared with us her Statement of Qualifications as recently submitted to the City Council for the interim District 2 seat.
We have five club members who have applied for the position. San Diego City Council is scheduled to interview all of the qualified candidates and then to take a vote on Monday April 7th.
I am honored to submit an application to fill the vacancy on the City Council. I am well qualified in many ways including experience and community participation.
Summary of Experience
Director of Assessment and Outreach, San Diego State University, Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education, Professional Development Collaborative, San Diego, CA 2000 -2009. Participated in research to find a nexus between student achievement and professional development for teachers.Superintendent: 1990 – 1998
Escondido Union High School District
California Superintendent of the Year, 1997Chief Executive Officer for 7,600 high school students and 17,000 adults with three comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school, an independent study high school, a Charter High School and an Adult Education program. Construction included a maintenance and operations facility, and retrofit of a restaurant and strip shopping center purchased from RTC for a District Service Center. A general obligation bond for $43M passed by 71% to build Valley Center High School and refurbish the existing schools.

West Covina Unified School District, West Covina, CADeveloped and implemented a Fiscal Recovery Plan to repay a $4.3M emergency appropriation from the State. Implemented a school consolidation plan to close a high school, two intermediate schools and one elementary school. Negotiated sale of two surplus school sites; opened a new middle school on the closed high school site, and developed a district mission statement with staff and community assistance.

Historical Preservation – When we returned to San Diego in 1998 we purchased a cottage built in 1915 and joined the OB Historic Cottage District. We then obtained Mills Act designation. We are pleased that we were able to preserve this very early cottage in OB.I also serve on the Ocean Beach Historical Society Board of Directors.
Charter Schools – Board of Directors of the Altus Institute, a Charter Management Corporation. In addition, I chair the Board of the Altus – Charter School of San Diego, and serve on the Boards of the Altus – Audeo, Altus – Laurel Preparatory and Altus – Mirus.
Ocean Beach Planning Board – I served on the OBPB for 8 years (2005 – 2013) and was Chair during the 2012 – 2013 year.
Ocean Beach Town Council – I have been involved since 1998 and served on the Board of Directors for several terms until 2010.
Ocean Beach Community Development Corporation – I have been on the Board since 2013 and am currently Secretary.
Ocean Beach MainStreet Association – I am an active volunteer, supervise donation cans for the July 4 fireworks, and deliver Directories to homes and businesses.
Pt Loma Democratic Club – I am a Past President and currently Membership Chairperson.
In addition – My Ph.D. in Mathematics Education is from the University of Minnesota and I would bring my mathematical reasoning to the position.
