February 19, 2014: Run Women Run announced today that the non-partisan political group has endorsed Ocean Gretchen NewsomBeach community leader Gretchen Kinney Newsom for the interim San Diego City Council District 2 seat that will become vacant after current Councilmember Kevin Faulconer takes office as Mayor.

“Run Women Run is pleased to endorse Gretchen Kinney Newsom to replace Kevin Faulconer in District 2 during this interim period. Gretchen’s experience, leadership and commitment to her community make her the ideal person to serve District 2 and will serve her well as a member of City Council,” said Jamie Quient, Co-Chair, Run Women Run Political Action Committee and Executive Committee Member. The Political Action Committee voted to endorse Newsom at a special meeting on Tuesday evening.

Faulconer is expected to take office on March 3. The City Council has 30 days to select an interim representative. That person will serve until December 2014 and cannot be someone who is running for the permanent position. For the 2014 election, RWR has endorsed former federal prosecutor Sarah Boot for District 2.

Newsom currently serves as Principal and Director of Communications and Legislative Affairs at LeSar Development Consultants (LDC). Prior, she served as Special Assistant and senior advisor to the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, a bipartisan body charged with conducting the nation’s official inquiry into the causes of the financial and economic crisis.

Newsom previously worked for two real estate investment firms, the California State Treasurer’s office, and a gubernatorial campaign. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Humboldt State University with a degree in Government and Politics.
Newsom presently serves as President of the Ocean Beach Town Council where she focuses on preserving and improving community resources, advocating for a sustainable local economy, enhancing community dialogue, and increasing neighborhood safety. Newsom chairs the OB Holiday Parade, and is a member of the OB Historical Society and Run Women Run.

Started in 2008, Run Women Run is a non-partisan political group focused on inspiring, recruiting, training and supporting pro-choice San Diego women who seek elected or appointed positions. The group currently has almost 300 members from all parts of San Diego County.
