Oct 27 – Monthly Meeting – Covering California With Obamacare II

The Point Loma Democratic Club is focusing on the new California healthcare initiative at our October meeting. There are members of our club, children of club members, plus friends and neighbors who do not currently have affordable healthcare. We want to do everything we can to help everyone feel comfortable with and excited about this new opportunity.

The club is working with Senator Marty Block’s office, the Council of Community Clinics and 2-1-1, plus others, to put together programming for our members and the communities of Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Loma Portal.

At the Sunday, September 22 meeting, we provided information on what Covered California is, and isn’t. Karis Grounds (email: kgrounds@211sandiego.org), the Health Programs Manager at 2-1-1 San Diego, an organization that works as a hub for community, health and disaster services, spoke about the benefits to health coverage and the exciting changes with the health care reform. Karis answered questions from members and demonstrated the use of the calculator on the Covered California website.

Sunday, October 27, we are working to provide detailed information about how to shop for a plan that best meets the needs of the consumer; a program that totally empowers and gets as many questions answered as possible so that consumers will have the information necessary to get themselves covered by January 1.

We have setup a page on this website where you can ask questions about the new law that will be answered by Steve Rivera.

It’s a great new day for California. Offering this programming to ourselves, our neighbors and our friends will help make it a success and should be a source of pride to us as Point Loma Dems, so please help spread the word!

Steve Rivera
Steve is a graphic designer by trade and has been a political consultant, volunteer, and Democratic Party activist over the last 25 years. As President of the California Young Democrats in 1993, he was part of the statewide effort to educate the public about the Health Security Act. Currently serving as CDP Region 20 Director and part of the statewide effort to educate the public about the Affordable Care Act, he cannot help but reflect that it’s been 20 years since the last national effort.

We’ll also have updates on the special election for Mayor that is scheduled for November 19th with Permanent Mail Voter ballots to be sent out on October 21.

At our last meeting we had the chance to meet and ask questions of David Alvarez, Bruce Coons and Mike Aguirre. Since that meeting Bruce Coons withdrew from the race endorsing David Alvarez, who is the endorsed candidate of the San Diego County Democratic Party. Two club members are organizing “Meet and Greet” opportunities with David during October, the first of these is on Sunday October 13, and the other on Sunday October 20.
