The focus of the September and October monthly club meetings are focused on the new California healthcare initiative and implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Karis Grounds, Health Programs Manager at 2-1-1 San Diego, provided an overview of her organization and that of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. She noted that California is implementing a state-run exchange called Covered California, and provided details on this program.
Steve Rivera is CDP Region 20 Director and part of the statewide effort to educate the public about the Affordable Care Act. He will serve as the in-house club expert and will answer member questions on the website regarding the Affordable Care Act.
Susan Peinado introduced San Diego City Councilman David Alvarez, Former City Attorney Mike Aguirre, and club member Bruce Coons, Executive Director of Save our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) as candidates for Mayor of San Diego. Each candidate provided an overview of his background and candidacy and answered questions from club members.
Susan also introduced Sarah Boot, candidate for City Council District 2. She too provided an overview of her candidacy and background and invited the membership to attend her upcoming kick-off fundraiser in October.
In attendance at the meeting was Kiara Breadmore (and her father) Point Loma HIgh School student winner of our FDR Essay Award.
Ruth Rollins, Treasurer reported that the club has a total of 109 paid members, and membership has grown over 20% from last year’s total.
Sarah Boot, candidate for City Council District 2 was unanimously endorsed by the club.
