Aug 25 – Monthly Meeting – Our Annual Summer BBQ!



As is the tradition the August Monthly Meeting will be a social affair with our Annual Summer BBQ and fundraiser for the Western Service Workers Association and their Back to School Drive.

Please invite your friends and any potential members to attend and meet fellow Democrats in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Our speakers will feature Senator Marty Block, School Board Member Kevin Beiser and District 2 Candidate Sarah Boot.

MartyBlock160Senator Marty Block was elected in November 2012 to represent the 39th Senate District, which includes most of the City of San Diego north of SR-94, Coronado, Del Mar, and Solana Beach.

As a former Dean and director and retired professor at San Diego State University (SDSU), Senator Block brings his consummate knowledge of education to the Legislature. Prior to his 26 years of experience at SDSU, he was a Director of Student Legal Services and a history teacher in Illinois. His extensive background as a respected community volunteer, educational advocate and experienced professional has earned Senator Block wide acclaim from all communities in his district.

Kevin BeiserKevin Beiser, Vice-President, San Diego Unified School Board is up for re-election in 2014 and won the unanimous early endorsement of the club at our April meeting. Kevin helped turn around Granger Junior High School, an underperforming school in National City, and was named the “San Diego Math Teacher of the Year” in 2009. He has also received the “Distinguished Service Award” for his work with students and strong support for the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE). As a school board member, Beiser is working to reduce central office costs in order to preserve lower class sizes and enrichment programs for our children such as art, music, magnet schools and GATE. He is passionate about implementing research-based reforms that have helped turn around underperforming schools.

Sarah BootSarah Boot is running for San Diego City Council District 2 against Lori Zapf. Sarah was an Assistant United States Attorney, Criminal Division at United States Attorney’s Office. As a general prosecutor she has worked on local cases of sex trafficking, narcotics trafficking, and many other crimes. Until recently she was President of the Lawyers Club. She has previous experience working on campaigns and was an associate lawyer at Cooley LLP, where she represented Internet and technology companies, including eBay, Google and the Salk Institute.

Sarah is a graduate of the University of Michigan and serves on the advisory board of Run Women Run, she also serves as a volunteer career mentor for young women in a program called “Just In Time” and is an avid rock climber.

If you can, please bring school supplies, hand held calculators and backpacks (or a generous check) for the Western Service Workers Association Back to School Drive. The Club will furnish hamburgers, hot dogs, wine, beer, soda and water. Please bring $10.00 per person, or $5.00 per person and one dish to pass. You can pay by cash, check or credit card.
